Pair of Village Guardians

These two guardians unique to Cheju Island at the southern most tip of Korea are known as harubang. With their bulging eyes and menacing demeanor, these volcanic stone statues were placed either singly or in pairs at the entrance of every village to repel evil spirits. Though well known throughout the island, each village still managed to place their own stamp on these guardians and they differed in shape and size from hamlet to hamlet.
