About Yi Geon-pil (b.1830-?)

Yi Geon pil’s serene turn-of-the-century landscape depicts two pairs of figures - scholars conversing upon a rocky abutment and a scholar and attendant along the shore - awash in a dreamlike sea of white. The precision and rich variety of Yi’s delicate brushwork can only be described as virtuosic.

Yi perfectly balances the modern spareness of gentle expanses with the elegant strokes of tradition.
